Some systems consume significant energy; scams and illicit use impose social costs.
Claims require context
“Decentralised” may describe validators but not front ends, bridges, governance, or token ownership. “Efficient” may refer to settlement while ignoring compliance and recovery. “Scarce” does not mean valuable without durable demand.
A practical evaluation framework
- Identify the real user and the problem being solved.
- Map trust assumptions and critical dependencies.
- Separate network usefulness from token value.
- Examine supply, incentives, distribution, and unlocks.
- Plan for technical failure, regulation, and illiquidity.
Crypto is neither a universal solution nor an empty idea. It is a family of experiments whose usefulness and risks must be evaluated one system at a time.
